Washington State

Hace algunos meses un querido amigo, sabiendo que me gusta correr, me invitó a formar parte de una inigualable aventura: correr un Ragnar en el Estado de Washington, EE.UU. Este tipo de carreras son de travesías largas, 200 millas (o 320 kms) a recorrerse por un equipo de 12 corredores (cada uno con 3 tramos) sin parar hasta concluir (es decir 24/7). El reto me pareció interesante y accedí. 

Confieso que mis expectativas sobre el Estado de Washington eran mínimas. Mi enfoque estaba en la carrera. Pero la vida, maravillosa como siempre, me abrió los ojos a un lugar increíble, lleno de paisajes únicos, buenas cocinas, y lo mejor de todo, su gente. 

Washington State está ubicado al noroeste de los EEUU y es parte de la frontera con Canadá. Con una sierra montañosa maravillosa e imponente, también tiene acceso al Pacífico y es el puerto de salida a Alaska. Aunado a ello, Seattle, es una ciudad cosmopolita, típica de las grandes urbes americanas. 

En este lugar, la variedad de culturas y cocinas coexiste respetuosa y permite, a quienes la visitan, tener una variada opción al momento de sentarse a la mesa. 

Lola. Ubicado cerca del Mercado público, Lola ofrece a sus comensales una deliciosa prueba de las maravillas del mundo árabe y con el ánimo de no dejar pendiente ningún sabor, mi compañera de aventura y yo pedimos al centro la degustación con pan pita. Seis pequeños pero sustanciosos platitos aparecieron llenos de color y sabor. De ellos, mis favoritos fueron el tradicional de aceituna y el de pistache. A esto siguió un kebab de carne, ricamente especiado. De lo que más disfruté ahí fue el postre de coco, suave de textura e intenso en su sabor. 

The crumpet shop. Coqueto espacio, lleno de calidez desde el arribo, este es un negocio familiar con más de 40 años de operación. Aquí la especialidad son los “crumpets”, un panecito entre bisquet y waffle (cuya traducción es “bollo”) con textura suave y gentil, que puede tener sobre sí algún componente dulce o salado. Uno de salmón, otro de queso y uno más de limón, acompañados de un rico té de roibos, fueron el desayuno perfecto para un bello día.  Tostados, con mantequilla, más su complemento, casa bocado generaba una sonrisa.

Purple. Ubicado cerca del downtown, la propuesta de Purple es de un wine bar casual y cosmopolita. Lo más lindo del lugar sin duda es su caba en forma de espiral al centro del lugar. Ahí pudimos degustar una rica pasta con camarones, un rico trozo de costilla y una terna de vinos de la región. 

Pho 99. A mitad de nuestra travesía Runner, nuestro capitán de camioneta sugirió parar en este espacio vietnamita. Ahí pudimos degustar un típico ramen pero al estilo Vietnam (más caldoso, con más vegetales). 

Toby’s. Nuestro premio, al terminar todos los tramos de la camioneta número 1 (en la que estuve participando), fue una comilona de mariscos en esta tradicional taberna ubicada en Coupevielle. Local como aquellas que vemos en las películas, los locales se reúnen para beber cerveza y ver encuentros deportivos. Ahí degustamos un excelso chowder de mariscos, Mejillones del día y mariscos capeados, todos ellos de la región. 

Umi Sake House. También por recomendación, visitamos este gran lugar. Aquí la opción de sushi es amplísima y decidimos optar por pedir varios al centro (con variados sabores picantes, salados, marinos, etc.) más unos ricos edamames, acompañados de unos mochis (o pastelitos japoneses de hoja de arroz con helado por dentro).

Helado de Huckleberry. Durante mi visita a la montaña, tuve la posibilidad de degustar este delicioso helado, típico de la región. No hay traducción al español, pero es una baya deliciosa.

No quiero dejar de compartir un dato curioso que viví en un par de ocasiones. La gente es tan amable, que en los propios negocios te regalan cosas: un panecito un día, un tecito después, todo ello gustoso y gentil. Bonitos detalles. 

Y mucho menos quiero dejar de agradecer a mi equipo #WeLikeItDirty por la magia que creamos juntos: 12 desconocidos, unidos por un mismo fin, abiertos a la aventura, el compartir, reír y acompañar, con quienes después de más de 33 horas y varios cientos de kilómetros, generamos una amistad y complicidad que queda en mi corazón.

Few months ago, a dear friend, who knows that I love to run, invited me to be part of an incomparable adventure: to run a Ragnar in Washington State, US. These types of races are long journeys, 200 miles (or 320 kms) to be covered by a team of 12 runners (each one with 3 sections to run) without stopping until the end (24/7).  The challenge seemed interesting. I agreed.

I should confess that my expectations of Washington State were minimal.  My focus was on the race.  But life, wonderful as it is, opened my eyes to an incredible place, full of unique landscapes, good cuisine, and best of all, its people.

Washington State is located in the northwestern US and is part of the border with Canada.  With a wonderful and imposing mountain range, it also has access to the Pacific and is the port of departure to Alaska.  In addition to this, Seattle, is a cosmopolitan city, typical large American city.

 In this place, the variety of cultures and cuisines, respectfully coexist and allow those who visit it to have a varied option when sitting at the table.

 Lola.  Located near the Public Market, Lola offers to its guests a delicious taste of the wonders of the Arab world. With the aim of not leaving any flavor pending, my adventure partner and I asked for the tasting with pita bread.  Six small, but substantial dishes, appeared full of color and flavor.  My favorites were the traditional olive and the one of pistachio.  This was followed by a meat kebab, richly spiced.  What I enjoyed the most there was the coconut dessert, smooth in texture and intense in flavor.

 The crumpet shop.  Cozy space, full of warmth, this is a family business with more than 40 years of operation.  The specialty are the "crumpets", a biscuit-waffle bun, with a soft and gentle texture, which can include some sweet or salty ingredients on the top. One of salmon, another of cheese and one more of lemon, accompanied by a rich roibos tea, were the perfect breakfast for a beautiful day.  Toasted, with butter, plus its complement, each bite generated a smile.

 Purple.  Located near downtown, Purple's proposal is a casual and cosmopolitan wine bar.  The prettiest thing about the place is undoubtedly its spiral-shaped cabin in the center of the place.  There we were able to taste a delicious pasta with shrimp, a piece of rib and some wines from the region.

 Pho 99. Halfway through our Runner journey, our van captain suggested to stop at this Vietnamese space.  There we were able to taste a typical ramen but in the Vietnam style (more soupy, with more vegetables).

 Toby's.  Our prize, at the end of all the journey of van number 1 (in which I was participating), was a seafood feast in this traditional tavern located in Coupevielle.  Typical, like those we see in the movies, locals gather to drink beer and watch sporting events. In there, we tasted an excellent seafood chowder, Mussels of the day and weathered seafood, all of them from the region.

 Umi Sake House.  Also by recommendation, we visited this great place.  Here the choice of sushi is very wide and we decided to order several to share (with varied flavors: spicy, salty, marine, etc.) plus some delicious edamame, accompanied by mochis (or Japanese rice leaf cakes with ice cream inside) .

Huckleberry ice cream.  During my visit to the mountain, I had the opportunity to taste this delicious ice cream, typical of the region.  There is no Spanish translation, but it is a delicious berry.

I want to share a funny and lovely fact that I experienced on a couple of occasions.: The people are so kind that in the stores they may give you things for free just because: a crumpet one day, a tea cup on other.  Nice details.

And I don’t want to loose the opportunity to thank my #WeLikeItDirty team for the magic we created together: 12 strangers, united for the same purpose, open to adventure, sharing, laughing and accompanying, with whom after more than 33 hours and several hundreds of kilometers, we generated a friendship and complicity that remains in my heart.
